Marking Bingo Cards with Matchbox Twenty

Music bingo is one of the more amusing variants of the game. It works by letting players listen to a bunch of song clips, and having them daub the song titles on their cards appropriately. Of course, part of the game is to correctly guess the titles of the songs, otherwise the marked out holes won’t count.

Being a family-oriented game, most music bingo sessions do not feature songs from such musical acts as Hed PE, Limp Bizkit, Maroon 5, and others whose songs are often laden with profane or overtly sexually suggestive lyrics. As a general rule, many rock bands just aren’t deemed safe enough for those with innocent ears.

Matchbox Twenty isn’t one of those bands. To begin with, the band’s image is more of a bunch of regular guys who just ended up jamming together. No eyeliners and emo theatrics, no glam makeup and tongue waggles, no pierced noses and constant screaming, and definitely no diva rock star attitude. Just guitars, bass, drums, and a voice that’s neither too high-pitched nor too angsty.

The lyrical content of the songs often revolves around the sadness of having lost a significant other, and the ways one copes with that loss; poignant enough to make resident BingoGodz love deity Earos want to shoot arrows at Rob Thomas and his bandmates to let them know that failed loves aren’t as hopeless as they think they are. With melodies ranging from fittingly slow (Bright Lights), to just the right amount of rock blare (Disease), the band’s signature pop rock sound blends well with the messages that the songs wish to convey.

Matchbox Twenty isn’t a band which people would call edgy, and the members don’t aspire to be. They are, however, a band that’s very easy to get into and, if you stick around long enough, very enjoyable as well.
Just like bingo.
